Having lived in Southern Africa most of my life, I could certainly associate with this book. It brought to life the sounds and smells that can only come from Africa. Thoroughly enjoyed the read.
A great memoir about Mr. Kopp's growing up in Africa! Loved his stories and hearing about his Zambian adventures.
Kopp was born to American parents serving in Africa.
As with many "third culture" kids, the author had the challenge of figuring out where he belonged in this world.
Honest and descriptive of his experiences, but some (such as killing or eating odd animals) were a bit much for me.
Heard the author at a writers' group, so wanted to read his story. Enlightening. Worth a read.

It's one of those simple books on the surface, but it was one of those books that made me think. It was engaging and fun reading.
You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll begin to understand some things you didn't know or understand before. I sure did. The book has given me much food for thought & I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys reading, & the adventure of getting to see a different culture.

This novel is a classic of its genre - growing up in Africa. Refreshingly free of clichés and hyperbole, the writing is muscular and economical. It's a new voice that does justice to the poignant experiences of a young boy, son of American missionary parents, born in Zambia, and towards the end of the book returning to the United States. The author's analysis of his feelings on being sent to boarding school at an early age, and coming back to the very different American culture, are deep and masterly. I lived in Zambia for three years and delighted in his descriptions of the country. I was sent to boarding school at five and empathize with his dismay. It's a brave author who can bare his soul in an autobiography, and we are privileged to be able to read about him.
