Loved this story. I've been a vampire lover since I was really young. To put this affliction on Darcy was brilliant. To be 150 years old and never have loved until Elizabeth was both sad and happy at the same time. Sad because that's a long time to be without someone who is your soul mate, and happy knowing that you were the one person who he would risk all for. Darcy was old for a human, but young for a vampire. The adventurous trip to Europe was certainly something Lizzy will remember all the days of her life, and Darcy will be able to spend those days with her. The stories they might share with others if only they could tell. For who would believe them! For their love was able to bring peace to his tortured and tormented soul, and could honor the part of their wedding vows till death do us part.Tags : Mr. Darcy, Vampyre [Amanda Grange] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. Mr Darcy Vampyre Amanda Grange 9781402236976 Books Reviews
Let me state here and now that if you are looking for something comparable to 'Pride and Prejudice and Zombies', this book is not that. The Quirk book takes the original and weaves their alternate storyline into it.
This book is a continuation of Pride and Prejudice, one that tries to answer the "what-if" questions for those of us that want to know what happens after Austen closes her book.
The idea of the plot is excellent. What if Mr. Darcy were a vampire?
My problem lies with the style of writing and the strength of the plot. The author seems to veer away from Austen's Elizabeth and put in someone who is almost, but not quite like, our Lizzie. I don't see Lizzie letting her husband ignore her for hours on end, without there being some sort of confrontation or something resulting.
I could see this book doing well for "juvenile" fiction, but not for those who are interested more in having a parallel to Austen's work.
All in all, still an interesting read!
I rarely give a book five stars, but this one is it. I was blown away by the eloquence of this author and wish I were more eloquent to do justice in a review.
I have to admit that this is my first vampire novel, and I read it only as a 'what-if' variation of P&P, of which I read about one story a week. I was curious about how this book would fit in, as supernatural mysteries are not usually interesting to me. But I could not tear myself away from this book, so I read it in two days.
The language in the story was superb. Vivid mental images were drawn in the descriptive sections, and some were pure poetry. The torment of the characters was also described so that it was palpable. I think I have a pretty good vocabulary, but I have to admit that I had to look up more than a few words -- but fortunately I read it on my .
I liked the characters of Elizabeth and Darcy in this story. For the first time, I was able to see them as the 1995 adaptation actors -- usually I can't put a face to JAFF stories.
The vampyre background explains Darcy's brooding and many of his P&P issues, such as his rejection of Elizabeth at the Meryton Assembly Ball, and his apparent torment over finally offering for Lizzy at Hunsford, and his eventual determination to win her at all costs. I liked how Lady Catherine showed as another vamypyre it was perfect for her and Anne's characters from P&P. I also liked the original characters, including Sophia, the Count, and the Prince, who served to foreshadow Elizabeth's eventual discovery that Darcy was a vampyre.
Of course the title gives it away, but as readers, Amanda Grange kept us on our toes waiting and waiting for the moment Elizabeth discovers that Darcy is a vampyre, and every time we thought we would see the revelation, she snatched it from us. The letters to Jane showed the progression of the story ITO Elizabeth's concerns and foreboding sense, and back to her eventual happy marriage. I liked the symbolism of their love being the thing that caused him to become human again, and that she was the cause of his death, as in his mortality.
I just bought Mr. Darcy's Diary as a result of reading this book.
Mr. Darcy, Vampyre by Amanda Grange starts out with the double wedding between Bingley and Jane, and Darcy and Elizabeth. Immediately following the wedding breakfast Darcy and Elizabeth begin their wedding honeymoon tour. Once in the carriage, Darcy re-directs the driver away from the Lake District and toward the continent. Darcy informs Elizabeth he is taking her to Europe instead. Although confused at the quick change of plans, Elizabeth is not completely put out about seeing Europe. There tour continues through Europe to the Alps and Venice, but Elizabeth become increasingly nervous and distraught that her husband has yet to come to her at night. She worries that her new husband is not happy with her, and regrets his decision of marrying a woman so below his rank. As she sees the grandeur in Europe and his numerous homes throughout, she quickly realizes the difference in their circles is much larger than she ever imagined. Darcy is unable to confide his secrets in his new wife and drags Elizabeth throughout Europe seeking the advice that will fix his distress.
Not all of Darcy's acquaintances are what they seem and Elizabeth ends up in arms way; twice Darcy must come to her rescue and reveal his true vampire nature. Elizabeth is relieved that Darcy is still in love with her, and is relieved his aloofness was only caused by the small problem of being a vampire. She is able to cast this predicament aside as is willing to truly "become his wife" even it means she will be turned herself. Just in the nick of time one of Darcy's servants comes forward with a cure to his curse. This is where the book just went ridiculous....
Darcy and Elizabeth find their way to an ancient Roman temple where Darcy reads an ancient inscription and must solve a riddle. The walls and floor begin to crumble and water fills the temple. It appears as the two are going to drown and they have an intimate fair-well kiss. The curing water begins to recede again and Darcy is no longer a vampire.
For the first 3/4 of this book I honestly could not put it down. The ending was painfully ridiculous. I would have enjoyed it more if Elizabeth had to give up mortality to be with him. Or better yet, Darcy's cure could have been the true love of a mortal woman. Ugh.. it had such promise.
