"Why doth treason never prosper?
Because if it prosper, none dare call it treason."
Humanity has reached out into space and settled nearly three hundred worlds, but all is not well in the Human Sphere. The United Nations is locked into a war with the Colonies, entire worlds are being devastated by war, civilisation is on the verge of falling apart and Earth is on the verge of complete environmental collapse. The war is unwinnable, yet the UN has no choice, but to keep fighting. The Political Class will not accept a defeat. It would mean the end of their power.
A new recruit into the United Nations Peace Force, John Walker, is the only man who can save humanity – at the cost of everything he’d ever loved. This is his story.

I got hooked on Chris's writing with Ark Royal, I have been an avid reader of his work since. Some readers want the author to sick to one genre or concept, Chris is a very prolific writer and while I haven't delved into some of the other genres he haunts I'm extremely happy with his visions of our future in space. This book is an excellent example of his concept and it's development. Many reviews lament that his plot is 'predictable' and 'obvious', I would argue that the expertise is in the telling. How it's told is just as important. Did you like the characters, etc.
In music we've been using the same notes for hundreds of years and the diversity of the music created in all this time is amazing. With only about 20 master plots in literature I'm happy that so many gifted writers are coming on the scene to entertain us.
Chris Nuttall is one of these new Masters.
Every book of his that I have read has lured me to read the next then the next. They don't disappoint.
I just finished this book. I like this kind of story. It has it's origin in a depressing future and we are witnesses to the overthrowing of this corrupt society. Typical of Chris.his hero is an everyman from nothing to awakening to emergence.
Told in a very straightforward way, I highly recommend this book. I just started book 2.
As is typical of self published books and Chris's are the occasional editorial errors. Misspelled words and other minor things. I notice them, but they're rare and usually do not pull me out of the narrative.
A good read....

Patriotic Treason Martial Law Book 1 eBook Christopher Nuttall Reviews
For me, what makes science fiction readable is if it's grounded in a recognisable reality. What I mean is, if the plot has believable roots in the world as we know it, it becomes a 'what if' story and (hopefully) challenges your imagination.
Patriotic Treason started a bit shakily, but once it got going the plot (about a United Nations in the future) became quite believable. How many countries / organisations started out with good intent only to be hijacked years later by power mongers or misguided individuals?
The story was well paced, with inter chapter passages from a future history book describing the United Nations Peacekeeping Force as seen after it collapsed at the end of the story. I'd give Christopher Nuttall 10 out of 10 for his 'future history' and fall of the UN. The use of propaganda to keep the peace at home and the (mis)use of the military to control a corrupt leadership.
All in all a good read marred by lots and lots of awful typos. I rated this book at 4 stars and would have given it 5 but for the annoying typos. Looking forward to the sequel.
The three stars above are rather weak. The main reason I read this book is that it is the prequel to PickingUp The Pieces by the same author. Now Patriotic Treason is not bad, but there are some things in it that disturbs me a bit. I mean there is nothing wrong for a writer to borrow a few things here and there but Nuttall goes a little further than that. He could at least have given a little tribute to all the writers that has influenced him among which you would find Robert Heinlein, Jerry Pournelle, S.M Stirling, John Ringo, Tom Kratmann and Michael Williamson to mention some. That said however, the story works. Set in the far future when the United Nations dominate the known Universe (hello Williamson and Kratmann) a young naval officer finds out that the UN has become a tyrant and is also on the verge of collaps. He decides to do something about it, collecting some likeminded around him. I won't tell you what happens, wou will have to do as I and buy the book. Beside having borrowing heavily from other writers there is something else that bugs me. Nuttall is British but the novel is full of mis-spellings and grammatical errors. It is like the author have'nt had time or resources to correct the language before publishing the novel. Proof-reading is the word I think. To sum it up, Christopher Nuttall definitely shows promise and I am going to read his next novel in this mini seies Picking Up The Pieces.
Sincerely
Hans
There are so many typos and grammatically awkward sentences in this book that one has to wonder if it has even been proofread. It is not so bad that it meaningfully affects readability, but it's annoying.
The plot is basic and not particularly original (government bureaucracy has run amok and is precipitating the downfall of civilization unless stopped), which by itself is not a criminal sin (I've read plenty of highly entertaining books that build on a mundane starting point and plot), but the characters never really take off, remain mostly predictable, and when they are not the unexpected comes across as the result of poor writing rather the development of a more complex character (the relationship between the main character and his girlfriend is a perfect example).
It's not bad to the point that I stopped reading, but I had no problem putting the book aside for several days and this while on vacation. Overall, I would not have bought it had I known what I now know.
There are two problems that desperately need to be addressed I this largely good and nearly professional book.
First, it needs copy editing. Spell checking can not substitute for copy editing. At a minimum, the author needs to provide a feedback address and accept reader's edits. One horrific example is when Captain Harrison is referred to as the diseased rather than the deceased during his funeral service. -(
The second problem is one which a professional editor or a good team of alpha readers would have identified. After the Hero leaves Heinlein, essentially no detail is spared on his management of his ship, but essentially no detail is provided on the development and management of the rebellion.
A quick re-read of "the Moon is a Harsh Mistress" would clarify the problem for the author.
Still well worth the low cost, but it could be SO much better.
And the author really needs to provide a feedback channel and update the book.
